There were three good reasons why I shouldn’t have run on Wednesday night.

1) It was about a million degrees in Wimbledon – well maybe about 28C by the time I got home
2) I’d woken up in the middle of the night with cramp in my right calf and it was still really sore
3) It was my first session of ‘Speed Work’ and I only work from 9 to 5, with an hour for lunch

But, and believe me this shocked me more than it will shock you, I put my trainers on, had a glass of water then went out and ran! Despite all the very legitimate reasons I had not to, I did it and I survived.

My speed work went like this – run as slow as you like for a mile to warm up; run as fast as I could for a mile for 1 mile; run as slow as you like for 1/2 mile; do another fast 1 mile followed by slow 1/2; then finish with a slow mile to warm down.
