Coming away from the Great Eastern Run at the weekend without a PB (unless I resort to claiming it as a half-marathon with a cold PB) means I still have two PBs to find and less than two weeks to find them if I’m to bag myself an awesome this autumn.
So race listings have been browsed, reviews read and decisions made. I will be making my debut on the parkrun scene this weekend and lining up for a free 5k race around a London park in search of PB number two.
Despite living less than two miles from the start of one for three years and carrying a card in my purse for as long, I’m embarrassed that I haven’t made it to a parkrun event before now. They’re free events organised by volunteers that are accurately measured and timed. Mo Farrah has been known to turn up at the Bushy Park event on occasion and if they’re good enough for Mo they’re in all honesty probably a bit too good for me.
But this weekend I will change all that. And now that I have pledged my allegiance to this weekend’s parkrun, I can’t exactly go back on my word and expect to show my face round here again can I?
If you haven’t heard of parkrun before, go check them out now. They have events all over the country (and abroad) and anyone is welcome to run or help out. If you have run a parkrun race before, let me know below which one you did.
I go to the Bedford parkrun and agree with you – great events. People of all abilities, a great way to measure your progress and just to chat to like-minded people. I tend to combine mine with a cake and coffee treat afterwards!
I’ve been a regular at Milton Keynes parkrun since June now and I’ve never looked back. Beautiful course, PBs nearly every week so far and the chance to let off some of my competitive steam. I’m sure it’s contributed positivity to my progress overall and in other distances too.
I’ve only volunteered once so far (another one due just before the Great South Run), but can recommend it as a way to give something back and see how it’s all done behind the scenes.
Saturday is now my favourite day of the week. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
