Goodbye old friends

Brimming with confidence from Monday’s run I headed for the gym yesterday lunchtime ready to put in another good time on the treadmill. I think the phrase we’re looking for is ‘over-confident’.

In all my new-found keenness, I forgot to stretch before I started to run and it wasn’t long before my legs started to ache and a stitch appeared in my side.
After 10 minutes of running I had to slow to a walk for a minute and then managed another 5 minutes running to cover 3KM. I’ve known since I started that I need proper running trainers but I’ve been reluctant to pay for a pair of trainers for something I may have given up on. Yesterday’s run made me realise I need to get them right now as my current, non-running trainers are actually causing me pain.
Though I, like most girls, love getting new shoes – with a pair of running shoes comes a commitment. I have a sewing machine and a climbing kit sat in the bottom of the wardrobe from previous new hobbies that I soon got fed up of or that it was just to complicated to keep going. I don’t need to spend £60 on a pair of trainers to do the same.
I’ve thought long and hard about it and I’m going to get fitted with a new pair of trainers. I’ve heard that going to a running shop to get properly fitted with the right sort of shoe can save you a lot of pain and possible injury. I’m guessing it will feel a bit like when you were a child and you used to get your feet measured for shoes. Why doesn’t that happen once you reach adulthood? I’d have less pairs of shoes that I wore once and then gave up on because I couldn’t tolerate the pain. Forget telling us to stop wasting money on food we throw away in these times of credit crunching, Mr Brown, and bring back the shoe fitter!
So it’s goodbye to my old trainers. I think they’ve been with me for about five years but they’ve not done that many miles. They were about £20 in the sale and are more ‘fashion trainers’ than for actual sport but that about sums up the old me. Bring on the new me and some ugly, functional training shoes!
