Capri or not capri? That is the question when it comes to summer running kit. While winter running kit is about getting the delicate balance of not being too cold when you start out but not being too hot once you get going, summer kit is more fun and has only one rule (if you’re me): less is more.

Shorts are called shorts for a reason, so be brave and be bold. But, let’s not be indecent – there’s likely to be children in the park you’re about to run around. The advantage shorts have over capri tights is that they fold down to pretty much nothing, so they’re ideal if you’re taking your kit away on holiday with you. Worried you don’t have the legs for shorts? I say nonsence – you’re a runner. You look awesome.

On top the choice of vest or t-shirt, cropped or not cropped is too much for the indecisive. If you’re prone to a lobster tan as I am, go for a little more coverage on the shoulders on all but the shortest runs. Also don’t forget a cap and some good sun protection – however fast you are you won’t outrun the sun.

If you too live on a rainy island where the hot and sunny party of the ‘summer’ will constitute three hours one Thursday afternoon while you’re at your desk, you might want to try bringing the summer to your running by wearing garish bright colours that clash. You will, at least, get some use out of your sunglasses.

Summer is all about shorter distances – from June to September 5K and 10K races are more common than running blogs. And to help shave off those vital few seconds, a lighter quicker running shoes might just do the business. Note: lighter shoes are not a substitute for actual speed training. Unfortunately.
