Everyone remembers their first time right?  Beforehand you have so many questions but you’re embarrassed to ask some of them for fear of seeming inexperienced and getting laughed at. And after it’s done you feel like a different person. You walk a bit taller, that’s when the soreness has subsided and you can walk properly again.

Your first marathon is a big deal.

On Saturday I spent the day with a group of nervous first-timers talking about marathons. The aim of the day was to answer any questions and concerns they had and send them away with more confidence to tackle their training and the race itself.

We covered a lot of ground in the time we were together, from the basics of training and how to adapt it when things go wrong, to fuelling your runs and nailing your race plan.

And then we headed to the park to practice some running drills and run up and down a hill a few times.
