Treadmill or park?

For most runners, hitting the treadmill very definitely falls into the category of 'Plan C'. When it comes to running, we'd all much rather the picture we have in our heads of running along an amazing stretch of coastline, along a mountain trail or through the countryside: that is Plan A. But as we live [...]

Food diary learnings

I love junk TV. It's been too long since I watched Gillian Mckeith making some morbidly obese person cry or Dr Christian introducing two people with polar opposite eating disorders to each other and making them swap diets. My favourite part of these types of show is when some minimum wage researcher is dispatched to [...]

A marathoner’s diet

Last week I took a photo of everything I ate and drank (except water). Here' the results...Here's what I learnt from this experiment. Or you can view the food in all its hi-res glory here on Flickr.

Believe

Eddie Izzard and Matt Fitzgerald share a philosophy: you have to believe you can do something before you can do it. Last night I watched 'Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story' again just to hear Eddie tell me the following: You’ve got to believe you can be a standup before you can be a standup. You [...]

Team America

Blogger stats tells me that more that around half my readers are in the US. Hello to both of you. And also a belated happy 4th July. Tonight, in honour of your nation severing its ties with our motherland, I drank some beer. Yes, it was a day late, but check it out. Now I [...]

Saying no

My desk. 5pm.Colleague: Fancy a quick pint?Me: Ummmmm.....This morning I got up at 6 and trekked across London for an appointment. I didn't get to work until 10.30 so felt too bad to do anything more than eat a bagel at my desk. The afternoon was busy but my training plan stared up at me [...]

The beginnings of a marathon

Greece. Home of Ouzo, Feta, fried cheese and running. I'm happy to report that all but one of those things featured in my recent 9 day trip to Kefalonia - and it was the Ouzo that I passed on. Mythos was my drink of choice. The marathon, as we all know, began in Greece. So [...]

Doughnut try this at home

After 24 hours of nil by mouth I munched my way through a fair few Krispy Kremes. This was more than sufficient fueling for pathetic 2 miles on the bike. Repeat after me everyone: "this is not the way that sub-4 marathons are built". Well tomorrow is, as they say, another day on the schedule.

Hill training: the bad news is it works

Kate Bush was on to something. She knew the impact hill training could have on running performance, so much so that she wrote a song about it. In all honesty I hoped that she and the thousands of other hill training devotees were wrong and that it wouldn't work. Unfortunately it does. I say unfortunately [...]
